Radiation & Hazardous Substances Safety

Among the duties of the Office of Research Integrity and Compliance is the responsibility to help students and staff comply with rules pertaining to radioactive materials and hazardous substances. This responsibility is shared with the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), a department in Facilities Management (FAMA).

Hazardous Substances Committee (HSC)

The Hazardous Substances Committee is appointed by the Provost for the purpose of recommending policies and procedures for the safe and compliant use, storage, and disposal of Hazardous substances and hazardous materials on campus. The HSC is the approval authority for Particularly Hazardous Substances (PHS) use on campus and monitors the application of the policies in a manner to ensure laboratory safety and compliance on campus.

The Chemical Hygiene Plan

The Chemical Hygiene Plan is available from the EHS webpage and is the full statement of campus policy and procedures for handling hazardous substances on campus. Questions or comments about the University’s Chemical Hygiene Program, operated by EHS, may be directed to the campus Chemical Hygiene Officer Rick Williams.

The OSHA Laboratory Standard requires Chemical Hygiene Plans to include information on Particularly Hazardous Substances (PHS) that include select carcinogens, reproductive toxins, and substances with high acute toxicity.  The HSC must approve PHS to ensure laboratory workers have received the proper training on the hazards, equipment, and safety considerations prior to beginning research.  For more information on submitting a PHS request and approval process, see the ENHS website.

Radiation Safety Committee (RSC)

The Radiation Safety Committee is appointed by the Provost and monitors implementation of and compliance with campus radiological licenses issued by the Arkansas Department of Health, and monitors compliance with laws, regulations, policies and practices regarding the purchase, shipment, use, control, transfer, and disposal of sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation on campus.

Questions or comments about the University's Radiation Safety Program, operated by EHS, may be directed to EHS.

Radiation Safety Manual

The Radiation Safety Manual is available from the EHS webpage and is the guide to the safe use of radiological materials on campus.
