Centralized Animal Facilities Home

The Centralized Animal Facilities consist of the Central Laboratory Animal Facility (CLAF) and the South Campus Animal Facility (SCAF). Both CLAF and SCAF are ABSL-1 conventional animal housing facilities designed to house small rodents. Animal Care Staff provide daily husbandry services for all animals housed in the Centralized Animal Facilities.

CAF Orientation

Independent access to each facility requires participation in a facility specific orientation. Contact the Centralized Animal Facilities Manager to schedule an orientation session. The following dates are also shown in the calendar below.

CLAF Orientation is offered the 1st Wednesday of every month at 9:30am and the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 1:30pm. Training lasts approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
SCAF Orientation is offered the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 1:30pm and the 4th Wednesday of every month at 9:30am. Training lasts approximately 30 to 60 minutes.

Animal Order Form

Orders should be submitted to the CAF Manager using the CAF animal order form Charges associated with these orders will be billed to the cost center number listed on the form.

Approved animal vendors:

Jackson Laboratories – Delivers every Monday, except holidays.
Envigo – Delivers every other Tuesday on even weeks, except holidays.
Charles River – No set delivery schedule. Deliveries are weather dependent due to air freight of shipments.

Per Diem Rates

When charged to a federal sponsor, the cost of services of specialized facilities must include costs based on actual usage and can only include aggregate costs of services. No profit may be collected, and rates may not discriminate between federal and non-federal entities. The CAF Manager updates the per diem billing rates at the beginning of the fiscal year (July 1). Billing rates are reviewed biennially and are subject to adjustment by the Office of Research Accounting.

Reporting Animal Welfare Concerns

Any individual who has specific concerns that animals are not being used or treated in a humane and responsible manner by University faculty, staff, or students is encouraged to report such concerns to any member of the IACUC Program Staff (see below). The IACUC Chair, or other members of the IACUC appointed by the Chair, will investigate. If deficiencies are found, the IACUC will take whatever steps are necessary to ensure the safety and welfare of animals, and compliance with federal and state regulations and university policy on the care and use of animals in research, training and teaching activities.
